They have been learning about the numerator and denominator, and how each plays an important role in understanding fractions. The denominator tells us how many equal parts a whole has been divided into, while the numerator tells us how many of those parts we are looking at.
Using a variety of hands-on activities, the children explored fractions through shapes, pictorial models and number lines. They applied their understanding to match written fractions, such as 3/4, with the correct diagrams and representations. This supported them in building a clearer understanding of how fractions represent equal parts of a whole and strengthened their ability to link mathematical symbols with visual models.
The children worked collaboratively, discussing their ideas and supporting one another. It was wonderful to see them demonstrating our value of positive relationships as they learned together and communicated their answers to one another with great reasoning skills.
