Our vision for geography:
At Hawes Side, we believe our children should be active learners taking a keen interest in the world around them. Our aim is for all children to know what it is to be a geographer starting their journey by exploring Blackpool. We want our children to know how privileged we are to live in a coastal resort rich in natural and human habitats. We aspire for all our children to recognise their responsibility in caring for the world in which they live and the important role they have on ensuring the sustainability of our planet for future generations.
Our approach to geography:
Geography at Hawes Side Academy is taught weekly throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. As an academy, we identified the key knowledge and skills of each unit; each unit is designed to ensure progression across the school. At the beginning of each unit, children are invited to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points. Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
Cross curricular outcomes in geography are specifically planned for, with strong links between geography and literacy lessons identified, planned for and utilised. The local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.
