Our vision for mathematics:
Mathematical skills are considered vital to enable a person to function effectively in society. We aim to develop children's abilities to think analytically, solve problems and apply mathematics accurately and effectively in the real world.
Competence and confidence in mathematics are viewed as basic entitlements for the children of this school. Much time and energy are spent in helping this to be achieved. In doing so, we hope to impart a feeling of enjoyment in the subject and a pleasure in the recognition of patterns and the resolution of problems.
Mathematics is treated, where possible, as a practical subject where we aim to encourage a lively sense of interest using everyday examples to do with number, measurement and shape. Children are expected to learn multiplication tables in what we hope is an interesting way.
Our approach to mathematics:
At Hawes Side Academy our approach to teaching mathematics is through a 'maths mastery approach' which offers all pupils access to the mathematics curriculum. Children develop their mathematical fluency by being taught to solve mathematical problems with a deeper understanding of the subject.
This approach is an inclusive approach where children are given the time to think deeply about the mathematics involved in order to gain a deeper understanding of concepts. Through this approach children also build their self-confidence and resilience.
Children who grasp concepts quickly are challenged with rich and sophisticated problems; those children who are not sufficiently fluent are provided with additional support to consolidate their understanding before moving on.
Our mathematics curriculum:
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children experience a broad, balanced and progressive learning experience which builds on prior learning. The mathematics curriculum is taught following the structure below. We strive to meet the needs of the individual children so timing adaptions may be made; this does not impact on the content coverage.
Our multiplication tables:
At our academy, we encourage all children to begin learning their multiplication tables. This is highly important as they underpin all mathematical concepts and are the foundational building blocks to support maths moving forward.
