Our vision for online safety:

At Hawes Side Academy, we recognise that today’s pupils are growing up in an increasingly complex world, living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. Our online safety curriculum aims to educate children about the challenges, dangers and opportunities of being online. It is designed to give children a broad and deep understanding of the way the internet works. By understanding the forces at play in the online world, children should be much safer, and be able to thrive in the digital age. We want to equip pupils with the knowledge needed to make the best use of the internet and technology in a safe, considered and respectful way, so they are able to reap the benefits of the online world.

Our approach to online safety:

Our programme of study is based on four core themes within which there will be broad overlap and flexibility across all phases:

  1. Self image and identity
  2. Privacy, security and copyright
  3. Managing online information
  4. Online relationships

Our children spend time each half term, developing their knowledge and understanding of each of the key attributes in the hope that the children develop not only as independent learners, but confident young people who are prepared for the next steps in their lives.

Our curriculum content is clear, broad and balanced but teachers always adapt learning for the individual children and to address any current issues.

Our online safety curriculum:

Whilst we wish the children to master the skills to manage their online community safely, we value the importance of involving children's families in keeping children safe online too. In order to support families, we have provided links to a range of documentation discussing the management of online safety below.
