Back during the half term break, many of us at Hawes Side Academy had a great day attending the Dragon Boat Festival at Fairhaven lake in support of the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Inspired by the event, and to fit in with our Mandarin learning provision at Hawes Side, we took the subject into the classroom, for some special themed lessons on the Dragon Boat Festival and its significance in Chinese culture.
As well as being sent fun dragon boat based tasks to complete at home with their families, each pupil learnt the real meaning behind the tradition. In other classes, we made origami ‘Zongzi’ dumplings in the style of those traditionally eaten at the festival, and other pupils drew their own dragon boats.
We really look forward to next year's edition of the Dragon Boat Festival in Fylde, and maybe one day our pupils will get the chance to take part themselves. It was great to be able to link this fantastic charity event with activities in class.
At Hawes Side Academy, we are privileged to be able to provide classes in Mandarin, thanks to our connection with Lancaster University and our fantastic Mandarin Team who give classes in the Confucius Classroom!
